We are committed to continuous innovation to improve the quality, sustainability and efficiency of our products.
smartCylinder®, the latest product born from our R&D, attended the EU LIFE Program with a project of 2,8 mln€, obtaining a co-funding of 55%.
We are the first hydraulic cylinder manufacturer, who have done an LCA study on this product (Life Cycle Assessment), certified by a third party surveyor.

LIFE PROJECT: A TEST FOR OUR INNOVATION

We have developed a new approach in the hydraulic field: smartCylinder® is an hydraulic cylinder which integrates in its first version an “in body” pressure amplifier – the Cartridge Amplifier (CA). This new cylinder aims to offer several advantages:

Increased efficiency, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions;
Reduced weight thanks to a more compact cylinder design (with the same power), aimed for using smaller machineries or reduced working times;
Lower impact in the entire production chain (from raw materials to harmful substances used);
Greater safety by containing high pressure entirely within the cylinder.

The results of the EU LIFE project "PowerCylinder: Demonstrating lower emissions and higher efficiency through innovative hydraulic systems in demolition machinery" confirm these benefits.
The LCA study was conducted to assess the impact of the smartCylinder® in each phase of the product lifecycle. The usage phase is certainly the phase with the most significant impact.

LIFE PROJECT: THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

Field tests—conducted with 6 prototypes—showed that the same work was completed using the smartCylinder® in less time and with a significant reduction in emissions .

smartCylinder® reduces the carbon footprint in the demolition sector by decreasing the operating time (-10%) of heavy machinery and reducing the weight of hydraulic cylinders (up to 40%), allowing for:

The usage of the same tools with greater force;
The usage of smaller tools with the same force;
The usage of smaller machines (excavators) with a reduced environmental impact;
The future opportunity of powering smaller devices with batteries, boosting the environmental benefits.

The testing of the hydraulic cylinders smartCylinder® was carried out on demolition machines, but the innovative concept behind them, which is the basis of the next-generation of smartCylinder®, is potentially applicable to any industry usage of hydraulic cylinders for power transmission.

smartCylinder® 1.0

It is a game-changing hydraulic solution, designed and developed by Sighinolfi to increase productivity, to improve energy efficiency, and to reduce emissions in heavy-duty industrial applications, adapting its performance to the various operating conditions.

smart Cylinder® 1.0 contains a first-generation booster, designed for the complete integration within the rod.
The cartridge booster is set to activate itself at a specific pressure, generating an increase in force in order to overcome the resistance during the cylinder stroke.
This product is the best solution for overcoming pressure limitations or for installation in small space.

smartCylinder® 2.0

The main benefits of smart Cylinder® 2.0 arise from the idea of cleverly distributing the booster components inside the cylinder. It is incredibly fast, compact, and powerful. All the available energy is used to modulate the speed and the force of the work to do.
